Christian Pastoral Support Worker (CPSW)
Pastoral Care Workers (PCWs) are employed by SMG (Schools Ministry Group). As the employer of over 270 Pastoral Care Workers across South Australian government schools, SMG is an approved Chaplaincy Service provider under the National Student Wellbeing Program (NSWP) by the Department for Education (DfE).
PCWs serve as positive role models who provide compassionate pastoral and practical support throughout the school community. With backing from the local Christian community, PCWs help young people and school communities find Purpose, Value, and Hope.
Working in partnership with other wellbeing staff and developing connections with community services and agencies, PCWs fill vital gaps where flexible and consistent care is needed. They support the overall wellbeing of students and staff, guided by the resources and support of the local Christian community.
Key responsibilities of the PCW
- provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to students, staff, and families
- engage with the community, local churches, and external support services
- assist with wellbeing initiatives and personal support
- collaborate with school leadership to ensure student welfare
- maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines.
Day-to-day support
PCWs support the social and emotional wellbeing of students under the guidance of school leaders and wellbeing staff. This support often takes place during class, break times, and extracurricular activities, benefiting students, parents, and staff.
At RPS, our PCW:
- is a listening ear and an advocating voice for students
- provides classroom support for students as needed
- assist staff to help lessons run smoothly and ensures students have access to resources required for learning and completing work
- supports the development of student independent living skills through initiatives such as Breakfast Club, Lunchtime Cooking Club, and cooking lessons during class
